Dry Needling
Dr Matt Hempsell, Dr Katie Batten & Alison Clulee
Precision Treatment for muscle pain & dysfunction
Dry Needling is a precise, evidence-informed technique used to release tight, overactive muscles and restore normal movement.
Using fine, sterile filament needles (similar to acupuncture needles), we target specific trigger points within the muscle to reduce pain, improve joint mobility and optimise neuromuscular function.
At ONE HEALTH Centre in Port Macquarie, Dry Needling is not simply about relieving symptoms, it forms part of a comprehensive Osteopathic approach and Remedial Massage therapy, designed to address the underlying cause of dysfunction
How does Dry Needling work?
When the needle is gently inserted into dysfunctional muscle tissue, it may produce a local twitch response (LTR) — a brief involuntary contraction of the muscle fibre.
You may feel a short cramping sensation during this response, followed by:
- Rapid reduction in muscle tension
- Improved range of motion
- Reduced joint restriction
- Enhanced overall function
After treatment, mild muscular soreness (similar to post-exercise or deep massage) may occur and typically settles within 24–48 hours. Often there is no soreness and just improved symptoms.
When is Dry Needling helpful?
Dry Needling can assist with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Neck, mid-back and lower back pain
- Tension-type headaches
- Sciatica and Piriformis syndrome
- Jaw pain (TMJ dysfunction)
- Whiplash-associated disorders
- Carpal Tunnel syndrome
- and more!
Sporting & Overuse Injuries
Dry Needling is particularly effective in managing tendon and overload conditions such as:
- Groin strain
- Tennis or golfer’s elbow
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Gluteal tendinopathy
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Shin splint
Part of a Complete Treatment Plan
While Dry Needling can provide fast symptom relief, lasting results require addressing the root cause. ONE HEALTH integrates Dry Needling with hands-on Osteopathic techniques, Remedial Massage treatment, movement correction, strength rehabilitation and lifestyle guidance to restore full function and prevent recurrence.
Ready to Book?
If you’re experiencing persistent muscle tightness, restricted movement or injury, book an Osteopathy consultation or Remedial Massage consultation (with Alison) and we will assess whether Dry Needling is appropriate for you.
