Electrotherapy
Dr Matt Hempsell & Dr Katie Batten
At ONE HEALTH Centre in Port Macquarie, we use evidence-informed electrotherapy modalities to reduce pain, accelerate tissue healing and support recovery.
Interferential therapy is an advanced treatment tool used to complement hands-on Osteopathic care — helping restore function faster and more comfortably.
This therapy are not used in isolation, but as part of a comprehensive treatment plan addressing the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction.
Interferential Therapy (IFT)
Effective pain relief & muscle stimulation
Interferential therapy uses low-frequency electrical currents delivered through surface electrodes to stimulate nerves and soft tissue.
It is commonly used to:
- Reduce acute and chronic pain
- Decrease muscle spasm
- Improve circulation
- Reduce inflammation
- Assist early-stage injury management
The gentle electrical impulses help block pain signals to the brain while encouraging improvements to blood flow, tissue recovery and also reducing muscle spasm and swelling.
You may feel a mild tingling or pulsing sensation during treatment, which is comfortable and adjustable.
When is Interferential therapy helpful
IFT may be used for:
-
- Neck and lower back pain
- Sciatica
- Acute disc injury
- Muscle strains and ligament sprains
- Postural overload
- Whiplash injuries
- Shoulder and hip pain
Integrated, not isolated care
While electrotherapy and ultrasound therapy can significantly reduce pain and improve tissue healing, long-term results require addressing the biomechanics and load patterns that contributed to the injury in the first place.
As part of your Osteopathic treatment, these therapies may be combined with:
- Hands-on manual techniques
- Dry needling
- Movement retraining
- Strength and mobility prescription
- Lifestyle and load management guidance
Our goal is simple:
Restore function. Reduce pain. Prevent recurrence.
