Hip & groin pain

Hip and groin pain can have many possible causes, from temporary muscle strains to longer-term joint conditions. Discomfort in this area may arise from local structures such as muscles, tendons, and joints, or it may be referred from the lower back or pelvis.

Because the hip plays a central role in connecting the upper and lower body, it is involved in nearly every movement we make – which means it can be affected by posture, movement patterns, sports, and daily activities.

At ONE HEALTH, our practitioners assess how your hips, pelvis, and lower back move together, helping to identify possible contributing factors and guide a management plan tailored to your needs.

Common causes of hip & groin pain

  • Inflamed or irritated tendons
  • Muscle strains from sport or activity
  • Bursitis (inflammation of a fluid-filled sac near the joint)
  • Arthritis of the hip joint
  • Postural strain from sitting or standing for long periods
  • Repetitive or awkward movements
  • Referred pain from the lower back

Short-term (acute) pain

Minor muscle injuries are often seen in people who perform repeated sideways movements – such as soccer players, dancers, and AFL athletes. These can be painful but may settle with appropriate care and rest.

When assessing muscle pain, we also consider the surrounding muscles of the hip, pelvis, and groin to identify possible imbalances or overload patterns.

Longer-term (persistent) pain

Conditions such as arthritis or bursitis can cause more persistent discomfort. In these cases, your practitioner will work with you to develop a management plan, and where appropriate, recommend further medical review or collaboration with your GP for additional investigations or treatments.

How we may be able to help

Following a thorough assessment, your management plan may include:

  • Gentle techniques aimed at improving hip and pelvic mobility
  • Strategies to address postural habits and movement patterns
  • Exercises to support strength and flexibility in the hips, core, and lower limbs
  • Guidance on modifying activities to reduce aggravation
  • Referral for medical review if further diagnostic testing or treatment is required

If hip or groin pain is affecting your movement, sleep, or daily activities, book an appointment at ONE HEALTH today for a professional assessment and an individualised plan to support your recovery and mobility.
