Pain in the feet – especially in the heel – can make even simple daily activities uncomfortable. At ONE HEALTH, we regularly assess and manage conditions affecting the feet and heels, helping you understand the possible causes and explore strategies to improve comfort and mobility.
Understanding heel and foot pain
The heel bone (calcaneus) and surrounding structures form part of the foot’s arch, which is supported by the plantar fascia – a strong band of connective tissue running along the sole of the foot.
When this fascia is placed under repeated strain, irritation can occur at its attachment point to the heel bone. This condition is called plantar fasciitis and is one of the most common causes of heel pain.
In some cases, a small bony growth known as a heel spur may develop in the area. However, it is usually the inflammation from plantar fasciitis, not the spur itself, that causes discomfort.
Contributing factors
Common factors that may lead to heel or foot pain include:
- Inadequate arch support from footwear
- Collapsing arches placing strain on the plantar fascia
- Increased activity levels on hard surfaces
- Joint stiffness or muscle tightness in the foot and lower leg
- Compensatory muscle use due to instability in the foot
