Do Joints Really Go “Out of Place”? Busting the Back Pain Myth

Busting the slipped disc myth: joints don’t go out of place. Learn how

At ONE HEALTH, one of the most common things we hear is:
“My spine is out of alignment — can you put it back?”

The truth is: your joints don’t go out of alignment, your discs don’t slip, and no therapist is putting them back into place.

Why It Feels Like Your Spine Is “Out”

When you injure your back or neck, the surrounding muscles often spasm to protect the area. This can feel like something has shifted — but in reality, your spinal joints are extremely stable. They’re supported by strong ligaments, fascia, and over 460 muscles, which keep them firmly in place.

Unless you’ve had a serious trauma like a car accident, your joints simply don’t “pop out.”

What About “Slipped Discs”?

The term “slipped disc” is misleading. Discs are tough cartilage structures (like a firm rubber pad) that sit between each vertebra. They can tear, bulge, or herniate — sometimes pressing on nerves — but they do not slip out of place and cannot be “pushed back in.”

What Spinal Manipulation Really Does

When an Osteopath, Physiotherapist or Chiropractor performs a manipulation (sometimes called an adjustment), they are not “putting joints back in.” Instead, a few things happen:

  • A quick, precise movement targets a restricted joint.
  • The brain is “tricked” into releasing muscle spasm.
  • Mobility improves and pain often decreases.

The familiar “click” sound is simply gas bubbles releasing inside the joint fluid — not bones moving back.

The Bottom Line

  • Joints don’t go out of place.
  • Discs don’t slip.
  • Manipulation restores movement and reduces pain — it doesn’t realign bones.

At ONE HEALTH, our Osteopathy, Physiotherapy and Remedial Massage Therapy services focus on evidence-based treatment, pain relief, and long-term recovery.

If you’ve been told your spine is “out of alignment,” don’t worry — it’s not. With the right care, you can get moving again safely and confidently.
