Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs located between bones, tendons, and ligaments. Their role is to reduce friction and allow smooth movement of joints. When a bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, the condition is known as bursitis.
Bursitis can occur due to overuse of a joint, repetitive movements, prolonged pressure on a specific area, or direct trauma such as a fall or accident. It is a condition we frequently assess and manage at ONE HEALTH.
Common areas affected by bursitis
Bursitis can develop in many parts of the body, but it is most commonly seen in:
- Shoulder joint – inflammation here may contribute to impingement and reduced shoulder movement
- Hip joint – including trochanteric bursitis (side of the hip) and gluteus medius bursitis (buttock area)
- Knee – several bursae in and around the knee can become aggravated
- Elbow, wrist, and ankle – often linked to repetitive strain or direct impact
Symptoms that may be associated with bursitis
- Localised pain and tenderness
- Swelling around the joint
- Warmth or redness over the affected area
- Reduced range of motion
How we assess and manage bursitis
At ONE HEALTH, your practitioner will:
- Take a detailed medical history
- Perform an orthopaedic and musculoskeletal examination
- Assess the surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints for contributing factors
Your management plan may include:
- Gentle manual therapy to help reduce strain on the affected bursa
- Advice on activity modification and rest for the joint
- Guidance on hot/cold application to manage symptoms
- Prescribed exercises to address muscle imbalances, flexibility, and strength
- Use of therapeutic modalities such as ultrasound or interferential therapy where appropriate
- Referral to your GP for imaging (e.g., ultrasound or X-ray) or further medical treatment if required
Our approach
Our focus is on reducing irritation to the bursa, supporting recovery, and addressing the factors that may have contributed to its onset. This helps you not only manage the current episode but also reduce the risk of recurrence.
If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or reduced movement that could be related to bursitis, book an appointment at ONE HEALTH today for a professional assessment and a personalised management plan.
